Nyamisingisi village

Nyamisingisi — located in the Serengeti District — represents the first of two wells where we took a different approach from past projects. Instead of constructing a new well in a community, we worked with our partners and the district water engineers in Tanzania to identify existing wells that had been abandoned due to change in land ownership or disrepair. This idea was first presented to us by students from the University of Delaware and from Fordham University who traveled to Tanzania on a research grant in 2013.

Our new strategy came with the help of a new drilling partner, Mighty Men Drilling. Through their efforts, two wells were repaired within a few weeks and our network of supported wells expanded. The bore hole at Nyamisingisi is 64 meters, or approximately 210 feet. This single well benefited over 2,000 villagers through a well rehabilitation cost of only $2,200, helping us prove that this strategy is a cost-effective method of expanding water access.

This video shows the Mighty Men drillers chlorinating the new well in Nyamisingisi.
